Nissan is hard at work on a new hatchback that will directly compete with the Volkswagen Golf.
Speaking to UK-based Auto Express, Nissan product planning boss Andy Palmer admitted that the highly-popular Golf is the main target for the new car, stating “We’ll start by not making any excuses for our car – in terms of dynamics and perceived quality it has to match it [the Golf].”
Palmer goes on to say that the hatchback won’t look like the Golf; instead, it will have a more provocative styling, likely borrowing design cues from the Nissan Invitation concept (pictured above).
“The face is a little bit leftfield, a little bit edgy,” he said.
As for name, expect something that is both recognizable and new — it will “evoke something from the past.”
Palmer did not provide any details on when the car will be unveiled, but we expect it to show its face at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
