Ladies and gentlemen, your two-door S-Class has been revealed! The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe oozes class, pun intended, and looks virtually identical to the striking concept that previewed it.
Virtually in a segment of its own, at least for the time being, the latest S-Class Coupe is said to combine “the classic proportions of a large, sporty coupé with modern luxury and state-of-the art technology.” It has rear-wheel-drive proportions emphasized by a sleek profile that flows elegantly to a rear end incorporating smooth, subtly-styled taillights. Further accentuating its classy yet sporty demeanor is a long domed hood with pronounced lines, a low greenhouse with a high beltline, and muscular wheel arches housing large wheels (18- to 20-inch).
The attractive front fascia is a cross between that of the S-Class sedan and the S-Class Coupe Concept, featuring a very engaging interpretation of the German automaker’s three-dimensional diamond radiator grille and full-LED headlights that are available with 47 Swarovski crystals.
According to Gorden Wagener, Vice President Daimler AG, “Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all times, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor.” I agree completely; what about you?
Like the sedan’s, the dual-layered interior has a high-class appeal and quality workmanship characterized by top-notch materials and an elegant aesthetic. The sections — i.e. dashboard to door panels — transition seamlessly from one to the other, while the long list of color selection and standard ambient lighting (the driver can select from seven ‘moods’) provide an unprecedented level of warmth and wellness character. An optional head-up display (HUD) projects important information directly into the driver’s field of vision to prevent distractions.
Though a carryover, the coupe’s interior is distinct in a few ways: The “Super Sport” steering wheel is new, while the analog clock is conspicuously absent. It introduces several new colors, including Bengal red, saddle brown and porcelain.
Power will initially be provided by just one engine, a 4.7-liter V8 engine delivering 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. However, most of the S-Class sedan’s engines will eventually be offered, including a 5.5-liter V8 making around 593 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) in the range-topping AMG model.
As one of its main highlights, the S-Class Coupe introduces Mercedes-Benz’s latest MAGIC BODY CONTROL system, which now features a curve tilting function that allows the car to “lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier.” With three driving modes to choose from, it helps deliver “a more pleasant motoring experience” by reducing the lateral acceleration felt by the passengers.
After making its grand debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March, the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will go on sale in the second half of 2014. Now, head over to the photo gallery and video below and let us know what you think about the large German Coupe.
