With a BMW i5 reportedly already in the works, new details have emerged about the electric car’s design, driving range and release date.
Designed to fill the gaping gap between the i3 hatchback (shown above) and the i8 sports car, the i5 will ride on a longer version of the i3’s all-aluminum platform, providing rear passengers with over four inches of extra legroom and more cargo space.
More conventional in styling than its smaller brother, it will gain B-pillars and a set of front-hinged rear doors that make accessibility easier. According to Car and Driver, the interior could also be a bit more conservative in appearance.
Power will come from an all-electric drivetrain consisting of a rear-mounted electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack located under the floor, allowing the i5 to travel up to 200 miles on a single charge. Buyers looking for more range will have the option of a small gasoline-burning range extender that kicks in for short distances when the battery is running low on energy.
The BMW i5 is expected to go on sale in late 2016 with a starting price of approximately $50,000.
Lolz. So here we are, 2016. When is this magical fairy car going to be launching again?
