This image of the all-new 2014 Mazda3 hatchback was published in Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s annual auto industry analysis, leading us to believe that it is the real deal. If not, then it must be a thinly-disguised concept.
As you can see, the next ‘3, like the larger Mazda6 sedan, will adopt the Mazda’s new Kodo design philosophy, so no more smiley grille! It will also feature the company’s full suite of Skyactiv technologies that optimize fuel-economy while retaining the car’s sporty nature. The current model incorporates just a few of these technologies, most notably the Skyactiv engine and transmission.
Power might be provided by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with direct injection, while a more powerful 2.5-liter unit could be offered as an option. A diesel engine may also be offered.
The 2014 Mazda3 is expected to launch in North America in fall 2013. It will play a big roll in Mazda’s goal of selling more than 300,000 cars per year in the region.
